‘A Message from the Irish Regiments’, a pamphlet with extracts from a speech by John Redmond, issued by Department of Recruiting for Ireland, 32 Nassau Street, Dublin, four printed pages.
John Redmond was the leader of the Irish Party and had secured Home Rule for Ireland, the implementation of which was suspended following the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914. In September 1914 he advocated that Irish nationalists should join in the fight against Germany and encouraged recruitment to Irish regiments. He visited the front in November 1915 and met with Irish troops on the frontline. His brother Willie Redmond MP was serving with the British Army at the time. This pamphlet includes an abridged version of the speech he gave when he returned from France and Flanders. Hundreds of thousands of Irishmen served in the war and about 35,000 lost their lives.
Donor Kevin Rynne found this document in the family home following the death of his mother. It had been the property of father Michael Rynne (1922-1975). The is believed to have been collected by him.
