Quernstone

Beehive quernstone, fragment.

Bee-hive quern fragment from MacDuagh's Hermitage.

Half of top half of beehive querstone, made of granite. 25×12 cm. The hole was drilled from both sides. the diameter can not be established – it was probably ca. 3 cm. Rough sides and smooth botom suggest it was used for a longer period of time. The Quernstone was made with attention to detail, it is rough but symetric. Hole for grain is big at the top and narrow at the bottom so it is possible to put 1 dm3 of grain at once
