Box of sixteen photograph slides, record of state visit of the Crown Prince and Princess of Japan to Ireland in March 1985 and received by then President of Ireland, Dr. Patrick Hillery. The slides in a red, grey and white box, front of box reads “Gepe/20 SLIDE MOUNTS/2mm WITH GLASSES/ANTINEWTON/24 X 36/ART. 6002. White label attached to top lid in manuscript reads “Japanese Emperor’s visit to Ireland c 1985”. Each slide has a white plastic frame to front, and grey plastic frame at the back; 5 slides contain inscriptions in manuscript and these read 1) “? In National Museum ? Michael Ryan as guide”; 2) “Prob. at Cragganoun – Tom Sheedy of Bunratty in Pic”; 3) “At Limerick Farmhouse in Bunratty with Tom Sheedy”; 4) “Prob. at Cragganoun with Peter Harbison”; 6) Dressed for dinner with President and Mrs. Hillery”.

This collection of slide photographs of the Japanese state visit was found by person during clearance of former Teagasc Headquarters in Sandymount Ave., Dublin 4 and passed it on to donor, Dr Austin O’Sullivan former curator of the Irish Agricultural Museum at Johnstown Castle, Wexford.

The Emperor and Empress of Japan came to Ireland for a week in March 1985. The then Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko combined a holiday with an official return of Irish President Patrick Hillery’s visit to Japan in 1983. They arrived by private jet in Shannon Airport on 1 March and spent the weekend in Dromoland Castle in Co. Clare.
