Buckle

Buckle, fragment, copper alloy, four-spiked tongue from multi-stud chape

*

Buckle, fragment, copper alloy, four-spiked tongue from multi-stud chape buckle, probably a stock buckle. Cylindrical shaped bar with four relatively evenly spaced prongs centred on the bar, each prong is rectangular at the base and taper from base to tip. There appears to be some ferous material adhering to the bar on either side of the four prongs.

One of several medieval buckles put up for sale on an online auction site by a Clare antique dealer. Reported by the National Museum of Ireland and Clare Museum subsequently took possession of them on the assumption they are of Clare origin.
