Button from a uniform, ‘Clare Lunatic Asylum’, around a crown that is in the centre; at the back there is a loop ring for attaching to the garment with thread. Yellow metal.
Clare Lunatic Asylum was opened in 1868 on a 52 acre site on the Gort Road, Ennis. It cost £54,000 to build.
While the language around mental health has changed over the years – the asylum was later called Ennis Mental Hospital – it closed as Our Lady’s Hospital in 2002 and was still a psychiatric facility.
This button came from an unknown garment associated with the Clare Lunatic Asylum. It was found among a collection of miscellaneous buttons purchased at auction in Sixmilebridge many years ago.
