Card, Repeal Association member's card of Mr. D. Burke, 1842

Card, membership card of Loyal National Appeal Association of Ireland, dated 1842. Off-white rectangular card with green coloured printed text and imagery. Set inside the card edge is a lined border with shamrocks all around facing the edges. Within the border at the top centre is a circle enclsoing a harp surmounted by a crown and with a spray of shamrock around its base. The following text is set on either side and just beneath the image: “GOD SAVE THE QUEEN./LOYAL REPEAL ASSOCIATION/OF IRELAND.” Beneath a separating line within a blank space is a name in manuscript “Mr. D. Burke”, printed beneath this is the following: “Having paid One Shilling, is Enrolled as/A REPEALER,/on the Books of the Association./Dated this 25 day of January 1842./T. M. Ray Secretary.” The date, month and final digit of the year are in manuscript.

The membership card records and demonstrates that Mr. D. Burke was a paid up member of the Loyal National Repeal Association of Ireland in the year 1842. It was found among the possessions of the late Agnes Bourke, Kilkee, who died in the early 1960’s and was taken to the US by the Irish born father of the donor.
