Coffin handle

Coffin handle, iron, loop grip with rope type design

*

Coffin handle of iron, loop grip. The handle is rounded on the front but flat on the back and was hinged from the top and was attached around either side of a central rib. On either side of this rib a thick smooth rim runs around the outer edge. Inside this running down either side is a rope type decoration which terminates towards the base where four vertical thick rounded bands decorate the central lower section. A portion of the hinge fitting is still attached at the back.

Found by Simon Large, County Archaeologist, on the surface at Doonass Church, Doonass Demense, Clonlara, Co. Clare, following soil disturbance.
