The Forsa Cosanta Aitiuil came into being on 6 February 1946 with the demise of its predecessor, the Local Defence Force (LDF). The FCA was the reserve for the Irish Defence Forces. This compass, and others like it, we left behind by withdrawing British troops in 1922. Although they date to the First World War, the were used by the FCA for decades afterwards.
