Framed and glazed, black and white, Commandant T F Quinn and the Blue Hussars with the Duke of Beaufort, circa 1937; features man in uniform on horseback, shaking hand of older man standing beside him, who may have shamrock on his left breast; several uniformed hussars on horseback behind both figures.

Commandant T F Quinn was an Irish Army Officer and a member of the Irish Army Equitation Team in the 1930s. He originally came from Corofin and Bofey Quinn’s bar in the village was his family’s business.

He had a brother who was involved in the IRA and took part in the Ruan Barrack’s attack during the War of Independence in October 1920.

This photograph was donated by Pat Quinn, who was the nephew of T F Quinn.

T F Quinn and his wife Rita Considine had no children. Rita owned Considine’s Tea Room at the site of Brogan’s Pub in O’Connell Street, Ennis.

The Irish Army Equestrian Team was considered to be the best in the world in the 1930s and were favourites to win the gold at the 1936 Munich Olympics. However, the Irish government decided not to take part in that Olympiad.

Despite the information given with the photograph, it seems unlikely that if this is the Duke of Beaufort, and more likely to be President Douglas Hyde.
