Letter
From Charles Stewart Parnell to Miss Stritch, 3rd October, 1882.

Handwritten letter from Charles Stewart Parnell from Avondale, Rathdrum, County Wicklow to Miss Stritch, address not given; letter has black borders around edges and down the centre; letter refers to enclosed sums of money for tenants, and a case on the Aran Islands which cannot be defended. and dispenses some legal advice.
It is not known who Miss Stritch was, but the letter was donated by the O’Donoghue family, Ballina House, Labasheeda, County Clare.
The use of stationery with a black border around the edge served to indicate a family in mourning, and was a common practice in the Victorian-era. Parnell’s sister Fanny, a poet, died in the United States of a heart attack at the age of 33 on 20th July 1882, less than three months before this letter was written.
