GAA Centenary Medal, 1984.

*

Medal to commemorate John Joe Doyle’s inclusion on the GAA Centenary Hurling Team, 1984.

John Joe Doyle was captain of the Clare team beaten in the 1932 All Ireland Hurling Final.

The medal acknowledged his inclusion on the Team of the Century 1884-1984. Doyle is considered to be one of the greatest hurlers never to win an All-Ireland Hurling medal.

John Joe ‘Goggle’ Doyle wore spectacles while playing hurling. In order to protect them during a game, he made his own protective ‘goggles’ from bicycle spokes, medical bandages and elastic, earning him the nickname by which he was known.
