The Roman Catholic Church declared 1954 Marian Year, a year of special devotion to Our Lady. Consequently shrines and grottos built in many parts of Ireland during that year can still be seen today.

Fr. Patrick Peyton from Mayo established the family rosary crusade, which took him all over the world staging hundreds of radio and television shows with many famous stars of Broadway and Hollywood taking part.

His famous slogan was: “The family that prays together, stays together”
