Clay pipe
Pipe, clay, tobacco, bowl with small section of stem attached and heel, bird in circle motif
Pipe, clay, almost straight sided bowl with small section of stem attached and heel, what may be a raised image of a bird occurs on stem side of bowl, this is contained in an indented circle, there appears to be small letters encircling the image but they are difficult to read and mostly faded. Heel base has central raised strip and sides of heel contain two oval cartouches, one appears to have a raised cross in the centre.
Clay pipes were commonly used in Ireland in the 18th and 19th century and in the late 19th century, frequently carried political messages.
This one was found in upturned topsoil in the village of Clarecastle.
