Poster, ‘Address to the Electors’, ‘Vote ‘Yes’ for the Constitution’, signed by Eamon de Valera, Kilkenny, 23 June 1937. Issued on behalf of the Clare Comhairle Dáil Ceanntair (County Executive, Fianna Fáil) by D H MacParland, Election Agent and printed at Clare Champion Printing works.
The current Constitution of Ireland came into effect on 29th December 1937, repealing and replacing the Constitution of the Irish Free State which was associated with the divisive Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. It was approved in a national plebiscite on 1 July 1937 with the support of 56.5% of voter in the then Irish Free State.
The 1937 constitution is associated with Eamon de Valera, President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State at the time of its approval, (and who assumed the position of Taoiseach upon its approval). He personally supervised its creation.
This poster sought votes in support for the Constitution in the plebiscite that was required to adopt it.
The donor, Kevin Rynne, came across this document in the family home following the death of his mother. It had been the property of his father Michael Rynne (1922-1975), and is believed to have been collected by him.
