Ration book, 1948, red cover with black print, held together by two metal staples, book issued by Depart of Industry and Commerce, Dublin.. The text on the cover consists of the following: Sreath-Uimhir: Serial Number: U No. 84584. Leabhar Ciondala Generalta General Ration Book Tabhair Amach 1948 issue Ainm Name: Miss Lena Walshe. Seoladh Address: Queens Hotel, Abbey St, Ennis, Clare (the name and address are handwritten). Ma gheibhtear e seo ag dul amu, cuir e go dti: – If found return to: Runaidhe, Roinn Tionscail agus Trachtla, Baile Atha Cliath. Secretary, Department of Industry and Commerce, Dublin. W.P.W. Ltd. There is an official stamp at the top right hand corner showing image of harp and the words Diolta go hOifigiuil Official Paid. Another harp image is located just above the book title. Handwritten in pencil at the top of the cover is th following: “c/o Mrs Cunningham(?), 14 Raglan Rd”. Inside of front and back cover is a table for writing in “Shopkeeper’s Receipts for Pages Detached). This book contains handwritten and stamped details as follows: 14/1/49 (?) (date); Bacon Shops Ltd (stamped twice, once upside down) (Shopkeeper’s Signature and Address). No date, N & 0 (No. of page detached); Monahans (Shopkeeper’s Signature and Address). Pinned to inside front cover is a raffle ticket from Bacon Shops Limited and their associate The Big Bear Supermarket Ltd (2007.0040.0002). The first six pages consist of information about ration books in both Irish and English. Following this a number of pages have been removed. The remaining eleven pages contain unused ration tokens consisting of one page for Margarine, two pages for Flour or Bread, two pages for Clothing, one page for Soap, one page for Flour/Confectionary, and one page each for tokens lettered E, F, G,H, and Q, the pages are numbered 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 30 respectively. The name and address of Miss Lena Walshe and date of 11/12/’48 have been handwritten into the page containing tokens for Margarine (pg 7); and into Flour or Bread (pg 8), dated 31/5/’49, into Flour or Bread (pg 9) dated 11/12/’48; and into tokens lettered E (pg 18), dated 28/5/’49.
