Nightdress Case
Rectangular, white linen, with blue scalloping along edges and floral and leafy motifs, and a pouch where a nightdress can be stored.

Rectangular, white linen, with blue scalloping along edges and floral and leafy motifs also in blue thread, and a pouch where a nightdress can be stored. Very reminiscent of the Clare Embroidery school. Small brown stain on the reverse.
Biddy Quinn of Highfield, Ennis, gave this nightdress case to Maureen Murphy before she died about twenty years ago. The floral and leaf patterns and the scalloping, all in blue thread, are reminiscent of the Clare Embroidery school. This is not a surprise as Gort Lamán Guild of the Irish Country Women’s Association was founded in Barefield in 1912 by Jane Vere O’Brien. She was the daughter of Florence Vere O’Brien, founder of the Clare Embroidery school at Newhall in 1895. The guild is the second oldest in Ireland and the oldest in Clare. The guild celebrated its centenary in 2012.
Both Biddy Quinn and Maureen Murphy were in Gort Lamán ICA together. It was donated by Maureen on behalf of Gort Lomán ICA Guild.
