Reliquary

Relic of St Pius PII X, C P in small metal reliquary.

*

Small reliquary containing relic of S PII X, C P; brass case; red inset.

This is a relic of Pope Pius X (1835-1914), an Italian born Pope who was known for his conservatism. His pontificate was from 1903 to 1914. He brought in the Ne Temere decree, which was enthusiastically enforced by the Irish Catholic church, and resulted in the children of mixed marriages between Catholic and Protestant couples being brought up as Catholics. It was hugely divisive on the island of Ireland.

There was a high level of devotion to Pope Pius X between the two world wars. He was beatified in 1951 and canonised in 1954 and the relic may date to this period.
