Serviette
Serviette, supplied by BOAC for its passengers.
Serviette, white with a B.O.A.C. stitched into it near the bottom right hand corner on the obverse. Small and quite clean.
British Overseas Airways Corporation was established in 1940 and became British Airways in 1974. It began trans-Atlantic operations in October 1947. Flights to New York stopped over for refuelling at Shannon and Gander only, due to the prevailing westerly winds increasing fuel consumption.
This serviette was collected by Joe Hardaker who was a refueller at Shannon Airport from the opening of the airport until 1968. He had previously worked at Foynes sea-plane base where he learned the technical skills of refuelling
