Typed statement relating to the actions of Frank Butler, Captain, Ennis Company, 24 September, 1936. We the undersigned wish to state that Frank Butler was Company Captain of Ennis Company on both critical dates and took part in many engagements in the Anglo-Irish and Civil wars, including the following: Attack on Owen Touhy’s at Ennis (Record Office) on 27 October, 1919; Wounding of Colonel Murray White, Market Street on 14 April, 1920; Quin Road ambush July, 1920; Capture of Ruan Barracks on 18 October, 1920; At Spancilhill 28 November, 1920 (contemplated ambush at Newgrove); Fired at and wounded Black and Tan named Kemp at Parnell Street, Ennis, 28 December, 1920; removed arms from Spancilhill to Caherea 15 January, 1921; Capture of 1000 rounds of ammunition with P C McMahon from Military Barrack (Ordnace Survey Ennis) on January, 1920; Capture 26 bags of nails from Ennis Railway Station 26 February, 1921; Capture of rate books at Ennis 25 May, 1921; Attack on Roslevan on 31 May, 1921; Attempt to shoot White at Drumcliffe and fired on by Black and Tans, 1 May, 1921; Capture of 26 typewriters on 4 July, 1921; Shooting of Auxiliary Needham at Ennis, 8 July, 1921; Rescue of Keane and O’Keeffee from County Infirmary on 8 July, 1921; Moyriesk Ambush on 10 September, 1921; Stationed at Fox’s Hotel, from 11- 16 March, 1922; Stationed at Howards House, Barrack Street No. 2 Ennis and Corofin, 1922; At Officers Training Camp at Kilfenora and Clooney Tour of inspection of the companys of the 1st Battalion after Kilfenora Camp; Got several rifles and ammunition form (sic) the British Military at Ennis on several dates. Took part in several raids on Ennis addressed (sic) to British Military at Ennis; Took part in several raids at Ennis Railway Station for Belfast boycott goods and military and RIC stores; Page 2 continues: attempted to re-capture Quilty Barracks from the Free State Army, 1922; Escort German Rifles from Birr Barracks to Ennis; Attended Army Convention in Dublin 27 March, 1922; Arrested in ambush at Lifford Ennis, 6 July, 1922; interned at Ennis, Limerick and Gormanstown; Escaped Gormanstown Camp 10 April, 1923 and rejoined flying column of 2 battalion; Re arrested after ceize (sic) fire order, and interned at Ennis, Limerick, and Newbridge. Released on December 1923.
